Hawick is an active Borders town which provides all essential local facilities including professional services and a good range of shops and supermarkets. There are primary schools both in Hawick and in the nearby village of Denholm. Hawick also has an established high school.
Recreational opportunities include a leisure centre with swimming pool in Hawick and there are golf courses at both Hawick and Minto. The Roxburghe Championship Golf Course near Kelso is within easy reach. There are opportunities for many rural pursuits, such as walking, mountain biking, and salmon fishing on the Rivers Tweed and Teviot.
Hawick has a lively equestrian community and is fast becoming a centre for equestrian events. The Common Riding festival starts in Hawick usually in early May each year and is followed by riding events in most of the other border towns over the following 3 months. There is access to the Buccleuch ride, a 56 mile circular riding route most of which is off public roads. Facilities for horses and riders are excellent with the added attraction of Kelso race course close by.
The Borders is also well known for its rugby, with Hawick being one of Scotland’s premier teams.
